Abstract
Air pollution is one of the biggest concerns regarding health and the environment today. It is among the top three leading causes of death worldwide¹ and is associated with harmful ailments ranging from lung irritation to premature death². Residents of large cities like NYC are more vulnerable to these health impacts than their suburban counterparts because of their high population density and closer proximity to pollution sources³. Moreover, studies have shown that communities of color and low-income communities are disproportionately affected by health issues associated with poor environmental quality⁴. One such area includes Southeast Queens, which encompasses the study site for this paper. Located near JFK Airport, the greater Southeastern Queens community faces unique stressors related to airplane activity, including elevated noise levels and high rates of airborne particulate matter, greenhouse gases and volatile organic compounds VOCs (volatile organic compounds). These communities are at higher risk for developing respiratory illnesses and health complications related to air and noise pollution than those that are not situated near airports⁵. This poses a major Environmental Justice issue where community residents in areas that are near major pollution producing facilities may be more susceptible to adverse health effects, yet, they are not recognized as such⁶.
